Are You Taking Advantage of Google’s Universal Search?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

It’s been about 2 years since Google introduced Universal Search, and its impact on search results is still being felt today.

Google Universal Search displays products, videos, images, maps, ads, blogs, news, books and natural results (of course) — all on one page. If you hadn’t noticed, Google’s search results are getting pretty clogged up, making it even harder to rank on the first page!

Marketers have always had about a 60% better chance of getting a click if they’re listed in both paid and natural search results. Are you taking advantage of both? If you aren’t, it’s time you did.

Here are some tips that will help you take advantage of Google Universal Search:

  1. Use target keywords to name all of your images and keyword-centered anchor text. Also include keywords in captions, and make sure your robots.txt file can spider your images.
  2. If you don’t already have a video, then create one. A simple how-to or instructional video can be easily optimized by keyword-centric tagging.
  3. If you have an address make sure it’s listed in the local section and link the listing to your site using keyword-targeted anchor text.
  4. Get all of your blogs and news listed by sending out press releases on a regular basis. We recommend PRWeb for online distribution. Include targeted keywords throughout your releases and make sure any images have keyword-centric alt tags attached to them.

Google’s Real-Time Search

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Google search results will soon be available in real-time to everyone.  So, what’s the big deal? Well, according to Mashable, the real-time search feature will tell you what’s happening right now by streaming real-time tweets, news articles, Yahoo answers, and even web pages. You may also remember that Google created partnerships with Facebook and MySpace earlier this year, which means content from your company’s Facebook Fan and MySpace Pages will be streaming real-time in search results very soon.
If you’re like me and have yet to play with Google search results in real-time on your browser, take a look at Google’s very whimsical, Harry Potteresque video about it:

How does this affect your business?

Now, more than ever, it’s important to create new content on a consistent basis – every day! Now that Google will be streaming results in real-time, it will be very easy for stagnant companies to fall by the wayside and off of the first page.  If you don’t have a blog, if you aren’t on Twitter/Facebook/MySpace, and if you don’t produce new content – you’re in trouble. But it isn’t too late! Though it might take many months for your blog to rank highly in Google for a specific keyword, you can still produce content that gets the attention of your audience using Google’s real-time results.

It’s easy to get involved. Every day more and more people discover products and services through searches – on Google, on Twitter, on Facebook – anywhere. Now, Google’s real-time search has just made easier and simpler for customers to find out what’s going on with your brand right now – good or bad. If people are having a conversation on Twitter about your brand or industry, start a conversation and give insightful answers. Keep working to transform your company website from stagnant pages into a up-to-date site that produces consisten, interesting content that your prospective customers are searching for right now.

SEO News: November 2009 Google Algorithm Update

Monday, December 7th, 2009

As expected, Google has updated their search engine algorithm, causing some websites to increase their rankings and others to fall. Where does your website stand?  If you’re not sure, here is what you need to know about Google’s most recent update for effective SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

The new update seems to favor new pages, or new content. New pages are those that have recently been added to your website; new content refers to pages that have gone through significant changes in regards to content.  What does this mean? It basically means that if you don’t update your website by adding new content or new pages, your ranking will fall. Google loves to see fresh, new and original content on a consistent basis.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to putting new pages or new content on your site:

  • Changing the layout, template, images, etc will not get your site to rank higher.
  • Add alt tags to images, allowing the search engines to get a text sample of what the image is telling visitors.
  • You really need to change your website content. Don’t just add a few lines of text, reorder your content, or use auto-generated content. Major changes to the text should be made, even if this means starting from scratch or rewriting all of your existing copy.
  • The new copy should contain the proper keywords for each page. Use keywords that have a lot of searches and/or little competition. Each web page should be properly optimized for each keyword – but don’t overdo it as the search engines will view this as spam, negatively impacting your website, or even getting you permanently banned from the search engines.
  • Your homepage should link to the most important pages in your website. The more pages the homepage links to on your website, the higher those pages will rank in the search engine.
  • Create fresh, new keyword targeted content for other sites, news sites, article directories and blogs and link that content to related content on your site.
