Facebook takes #2 spot from Yahoo!

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

According to new web analytics research by Compete, Facebook is now the 2nd most popular website in the U.S., passing Yahoo with 133 million unique visitors in January.

Yahoo! was in the #1 spot for some time before losing out to Google in February 2008. Now it sits in 3rd place.

Facebook drew 133.6 million unique visitors in January, while Yahoo pulled in 132 million visitors. Google still leads the way with 147.8 million visitors, or nearly half the U.S. population.

Twitter is also on the up, according to separate research released by Venture Beat last week. The traffic increase has mainly been driven by Google, which recently started posting Twitter status updates in the new “real-time” search results.

Google Rolls Out Real-Time Search Tech

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Google rolled out real-time search technology last month, offering searchers access to brand-new blog posts, Tweets and news items far faster than the five to 15 minutes it previously took Google’s Web crawlers to discover newly created items. To do this, Google has adapted its page rank technology and created new algorithms to keep results relevant.

While Bing, Cuil and other search engines provide the same type of results, Google claims to offer the most comprehensive real-time results by scanning news headlines, blogs, and feeds from Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other sources.

How do they determine what to display in search results? Well, it’s basically based on reputation. Amit Singhal, Google Fellow, states, “You earn reputation, and then you give reputation. If lots of people follow you, and then you follow someone–then even though this [new person] does not have lots of followers,” his tweet is deemed valuable because his followers are themselves followed widely. It is “definitely, definitely” more than a popularity contest.”

Facebook #1 Most Visited Site on Christmas & New Year’s Day

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

For 364 of the 365 day in 2009, Google’s main page ranked as the most visited site by internet users in the United States on a daily basis. For 1 day, Christmas Day, Facebook captured that top spot. Facebook also took the #1 spot on the first day of 2010 – New Year’s Day.

Here’s a chart from Experian Hitwise showing market share of visits (U.S.) to Google and Facebook over the last 2 months.

It’s interesting to that Facebook’s #1 days both occurred on major holidays. It could be that social networking is more popular than search on holidays because most people in the U.S. have the day off. Or maybe they’re using the time to connect with loved ones and friends, rather than searching for the gifts they didn’t get!

Another interesting statistic from 2009 includes the most searched on terms across all major search engines in the U.S. for the year.

Here’s the list of Top 10 Search Terms (U.S.) for 2009 (Source: Experian Hitwise):

  1. Facebook
  2. MySpace
  3. Craigslist
  4. Youtube
  5. Yahoo Mail
  6. Google
  7. Yahoo
  8. eBay
  9. Facebook login
  10. Myspace.com
