Bing Market Share Update

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Every month since its launch, Microsoft’s Bing search engine keeps taking a little bit of market share. In August, Bing gained 0.4 percent to end the month with 9.3 percent of search query volumes in the U.S., according to comScore’s Qsearch estimates. Meanwhile, Google’s share came down 0.1 percent to 64.6 percent and Yahoo/s remained flat at 19.3 percent.

In other words, Bing showed the only significant gain, while everyone else stayed relatively flat. That $100 million marketing campaign must be working, or maybe it’s the improvements Bing is making to the search experience, or maybe it’s both. Whatever it is, it is translating into nearly a half-point market share gain every month for the past three months.

Bing is up a total of 1.3 percent from its launch at the end of May. Yahoo, however, is down 0.8 percent in that same period, so the combined gain is only half a point. But Yahoo has stabilized its share, and if Bing can continue to nibble away at the same rate, Google will have to start to actually worry.

Yahoo! Search Powered by Microsoft Bing

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Last Wednesday, search engines Bing and Yahoo! teamed up in an effort to become more competitive with Google.  Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search technology for Yahoo’s sites; Yahoo will be responsible for selling premium search ads for both companies.

How does this affect your business?

Well, in terms of SEO, Yahoo! search will simply carry a label at the bottom of SERPs that says “Powered by Bing.”

On the SEM front, Yahoo! and Bing will be consolidating their paid search platforms, giving advertisers a centralized place to maintain ads.

Nothing will change until they gain government approval – once this happens, they will begin to push out changes.  According to Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, Yahoo will transition to Bing search in major markets three to six months after the deal closes. Migration from Yahoo’s Panama ad system to Microsoft’s AdCenter platform will happen in 12 months after close.

Google vs. Bing – Bing Surpasses Yahoo!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

It took less than 1 week – for Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing, to surpass Yahoo! and become the #2 search engine in the U.S. and worldwide.

A report from StatCounter Global Stats, also states that Bing seized a little market share (5.62%) from rival search engines, Google and Yahoo!. While Google still dominates the U.S. search engine market with a 71.47% share, Bing grabbed 16.28% and Yahoo came in third with 10.22%.

So how does Bing compare to Google? Let’s check out a site called Blind Search – it lets you enter a search query and compare side-by-side results from the 3 major search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo!).

Here are the results using the keyword “Twitter”:

As you can see, the results vary for each search engine. Can you guess which set of results belong to which search engine? And which one did you choose? Here are the end results:
