Google announced that this is not a bug or an anomaly but rather an intentional change to Google’s ranking algorithm. Google stated:

Today we’ve launched a change to our ranking algorithm that will make it much easier for users to find a large number of results from a single site. For queries that indicate a strong user interest in a particular domain.

Google continued:

We expect today’s improvement will help users find deeper results from a single site, while still providing diversity on the results page.

This is interesting because Google’s Peter Norvig is quoted as saying, “for the second one [search result], you don’t want something that’s almost the same as the first. You prefer some diversity, so there’s where minority views start coming in.” Google has clearly decided that a result from the same Web site can still be diverse even if there are ten results all from the same domain.

According to data from Experian Hitwise, Ask.com showed a growth of 21 percent in March in its number of United States searches, month-over-month. Ask.com remains in fourth position in share of searches showing an increase of 2.84 percent from February to March. Yahoo has experienced a growth of 3 percent while Bing and Google each lost one percent of the market share in the same period.

Google remains the dominant search engine accounting for just under 70 percent of all U.S. searches. According to data from Experian Hitwise, this number is down almost two percentage points since October. Yahoo has also continued to lose some of its share of searches in the same period while Bing’s market share has remained relatively consistent. Search engine marketing trends show that smaller search engines such as Ask.com continue to grow their share of U.S. searches.
