Bing Now Powers Up to 25 Percent of Yahoo

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

On July 20, 2010, it was announced that Bing was powering up to 25 percent of Yahoo’s search results. Earlier this month, Yahoo began testing Bing powered search results and now there are live bucket tests underway on both the paid and organic side.

According to Yahoo’s Senior Vice President of Product Management, Mark Morrissey, only 3.5 percent of paid advertisements are being powered by Bing but up to 25 percent of the organic search results may be powered by Bing. It is hard to believe that one out four times you use Yahoo to conduct a search the search results will be powered by Bing.

How would you know which results you were viewing? You will not see a “powered by Bing” on all these test results. Morrissey said that some the test results will have the “powered by Bing” on them but Yahoo will be testing them with and without. However, once the official switch happens, Bing will power of all of Yahoo’s search results and contain the “powered by Bing” badge.

If you are unsure who is powering your search results you can check and compare the results of Bing and Yahoo to see if they match. Outside of your own comparison and possibly seeing a “powered by Bing” badge you will not know whether you search results are being powered by Bing or Yahoo but there is up to a 25 percent chance is Bing that is powering those results.

SEO Phoenix: Google Caffeine Increases the Speed of Search Results

Monday, July 12th, 2010

On June 8, 2010 Google announced that Google Caffeine was officially live. With Caffeine, Google’s new search index, Google claims that the speed of search results will increase by up to 50 percent. Quicker search results and faster indexing benefit both the users and the operators of the Web site but there are a number of things that Phoenix SEO (search engine optimization) experts should take into account in regards to their optimization efforts in order to keep up with Caffeine’s quicker pace.

  • Caffeine’s emphasis on speed will make page load times a larger factor than before. Google will be putting increased weight on page load time and pages that take a few seconds longer to load will now be more penalized than in the past. This will not only affect SEO experts but will also affect pay-per-click experts as well. Due to the fact that page load time also has an impact on quality scores in Adwords there will be more weight added to this factor than before Caffeine was implemented.
  • Google Caffeine also increases the importance of real-time web results. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter must be implemented in an SEO Phoenix strategy. These social media sites will help Google Caffeine index content faster and ultimately create a more relevant search landscape.
  • Quality content and keyword relevancy is also more important to Google Caffeine. Google has preached this for years but with Caffeine’s new speed creating a distributing high quality content is more important to achieving high search engine ranks.

Both users and operators of Google will benefit from Caffeine and it real-time results. However, Web site owners must make sure they can keep up with Caffeine’s increased pace.
