On July 20, 2010, it was announced that Bing was powering up to 25 percent of Yahoo’s search results. Earlier this month, Yahoo began testing Bing powered search results and now there are live bucket tests underway on both the paid and organic side.
According to Yahoo’s Senior Vice President of Product Management, Mark Morrissey, only 3.5 percent of paid advertisements are being powered by Bing but up to 25 percent of the organic search results may be powered by Bing. It is hard to believe that one out four times you use Yahoo to conduct a search the search results will be powered by Bing.
How would you know which results you were viewing? You will not see a “powered by Bing” on all these test results. Morrissey said that some the test results will have the “powered by Bing” on them but Yahoo will be testing them with and without. However, once the official switch happens, Bing will power of all of Yahoo’s search results and contain the “powered by Bing” badge.
If you are unsure who is powering your search results you can check and compare the results of Bing and Yahoo to see if they match. Outside of your own comparison and possibly seeing a “powered by Bing” badge you will not know whether you search results are being powered by Bing or Yahoo but there is up to a 25 percent chance is Bing that is powering those results.
