The February 2010 comScore Search Engine Rankings report shows that Google still holds the number one spot for the share of searches, with over 65%. Yahoo! Sites are in a distant second with a 16.8% share of searches and Microsoft Sites are third with an 11.5% share of searches. This is a minimal percentage change from the January shares, with Google gaining 0.1%, Yahoo down 0.2% and Microsoft up 0.2%. This is important information for companies trying to correctly leverage their online marketing
According to another study released by BIA/Kelsey and ConStat on consumer behavior, 97% of consumers use online media when researching services and products in their local area. This study is an ongoing tracking study of consumers. It shows that among those surveyed 24% visit verticals, 42% use comparison shopping sites, 48% access IYPs and 90% use search engines. The study also indicates an increasing fragmentation of consumer focus, due to the number of research sources used for local shopping has risen to 7.9 from 6.5 in 2009 and 5.8 in 2008. Local businesses need no further evidence to convince themselves that online marketings important and must be utilized.
