For 364 of the 365 day in 2009, Google’s main page ranked as the most visited site by internet users in the United States on a daily basis. For 1 day, Christmas Day, Facebook captured that top spot. Facebook also took the #1 spot on the first day of 2010 – New Year’s Day.
Here’s a chart from Experian Hitwise showing market share of visits (U.S.) to Google and Facebook over the last 2 months.
It’s interesting to that Facebook’s #1 days both occurred on major holidays. It could be that social networking is more popular than search on holidays because most people in the U.S. have the day off. Or maybe they’re using the time to connect with loved ones and friends, rather than searching for the gifts they didn’t get!
Another interesting statistic from 2009 includes the most searched on terms across all major search engines in the U.S. for the year.
Here’s the list of Top 10 Search Terms (U.S.) for 2009 (Source: Experian Hitwise):
- MySpace
- Craigslist
- Youtube
- Yahoo Mail
- Yahoo
- eBay
- Facebook login
- Myspace.com
