Monday, October 12th, 2009

This week, we thought we’d share a very informative video interview on the SEOMoz site. It features Googler, Maile Ohye, who answers some frequently asked questions for web developers, marketers and webmasters.

Watch the video to get info on how to approach issues like:

  • Getting deep sites indexed
  • Handling multiple sitemaps
  • How to influence crawl frequency and schedule
  • Whether or not to worry about incoming spam links
  • Duplicate content
  • …and more!

What Google’s Sidewiki Means to Marketers

Monday, October 5th, 2009

On September 23, Google released a new toolbar-based plug-in called Sidewiki.

Sidewiki allows anyone to add their own side notes to any webpage and share them with other searchers.  This basically creates worldwide public discussion board for every page on your website.

How does it work?

Users can download the Google Toolbar with the Sidewiki plug-in. Once they install the toolbar and login to their Gmail account, they are free to post comments on any webpage on any website. There’s an algorithm that determines which comments are more relevant and moves them to the top of the sidebar. How relevance is determined has yet to be explained and, like all other Google algorithms, probably never will be.  Google has, however, included an abuse policy that will remove spam, illegal content or content that advocates hate or violence.

What does this mean for you?

This basically means that your online public relations campaign just got a little bit harder. Now, anyone can say anything they want about you, your company, your products, your services, your customer service – anything. And it will be publicly displayed right next to Google’s search results. If you’re creating subpar products or delivering services that don’t meet the expectations you’ve been setting with your marketing, people will know and they’ll talk about it.

On the flip side, however, your company could benefit from this new online PR channel. With the right strategy and close monitoring, you may find that the comments help, rather than hinder, your traffic!  Find out how.

Member Communities More Popular Than Email

Monday, October 5th, 2009

A recent study published by Nielsen Online reports that “member communities” (e.g., social networks, blogs) have become more popular than e-mail. The study, called “Global Faces and Networked Places: A Nielsen report on Social Networking’s New Global Footprint,” shows the Top 5 online sectors worldwide ranked by active reach for December 2007 and December 2008.

According to the report, two-thirds of the world’s Internet population visit social networking or blogging sites, accounting for almost 10% of all internet time. Time spent on social network sites is also expanding. Worldwide activity in 2008 shows that ‘Member Communities’ accounted for one in every 15 online minutes – now it accounts for one in every 11.

While the data does not show a dramatic difference between member communities and e-mail use in terms of percentage points, it does reflect an impact that social communication is having on the way we work and communicate.
