A couple of months ago, we wrote a blog post about Twitter and how it can be used to help your business. Well, now it’s time to follow up with some interesting Twitter usage statistics recently published by Nielson. If you aren’t familiar with Nielson Media Research, they are one of (if not the #1) the most accurate and reliable online audience research firms.
So, what’s the main message of their research? Twitter.com is continuing to grow in both popularity and relevance in the eyes of consumers and corporations. In fact, unique visitors to Twitter increased 1382% year over year, from 475,000 in Feb ’08 to 7 million in Feb ’09. It is the fastest growing site in Member Communities for the month over Zimbio (240%) and Facebook (228%).
Where are all of these unique visitors coming from? You might expect them to be teens or college students, but you would be incorrect. In February, the largest age group on Twitter was 35-49 years; with nearly 3 million unique visitors. That is almost 42% of the Twitter audience!
What is driving their success? Well, the ability to tweet via mobile phone or the web has given their audience even greater access to the site. In January, 735,000 unique visitors accessed Twitter through their mobile phones. The average unique visited Twitter 14 times that month and spent an average of seven minutes on the site.
As Twitter continues to grow, many more corporations are looking to include it in their online marketing strategy, as it provides an economical way to keep consumers aware of and connected to their company.
